490 President Muegge reflected on the week in Atlanta and said,

" The IATSE Officer Institute was highly beneficial to myself as an officer of Local 490, as well as to our entire local. I learned so much: labor law, negotiation, organizing productions, dealing with the financial aspects of a local, the history of unions, how to better run meetings, and leadership skills... to name just some of what we were taught. We also made some good connections with officers from other Locals located around the country. My week in Atlanta for the training has given me a new, avid sense of optimism for the heights which I believe Local 490 can reach."

Secretary Bredhal describes the event as;

"President Muegge and I were lucky enough to attend the 2018 IATSE Officer Training.  It was an amazing opportunity for us both.
When we arrived at our first class on Monday, we didn’t know how intense the training would be. We would soon find out as the week progressed. The training started with an enjoyable program called the IATSE Road Show. It was a great full day course on why Unions matter.

The training reached its climax on Tuesday, with a full-blown assault on our brains on labor laws and finance. These where the most hard hitting out of all the courses.  A lot of was thrown at us. Luckily the training gave us binders with all the training in it and a website for more cross referencing. The rest of week we learned about; organizing, how to handle difficult situations, engage in contract negotiations (another intense one) and how to not burn out with time management strategies.

Bredahl continues, "When we didn’t have class a lot of us got together for lunch and dinner just to talk about idea on how to help each other with membership involvement, growing our numbers, how they handle contracts negotiations, and other committees. We are coming back with a lot of ideas to help our own Local. This was one of the best things for our Local. We recommend that more of our officers."

Muegge & Bredahl stand with Local 13 Officer Carrie Monroe.

The IA describes the training as;

"A five-day, intensive certification program, with courses ranging from Labor Law and Collective Bargaining to Union Finance, to managing day to day challenges and dealing with conflict. Instructors are experts in their fields and classes will provide hands-on, practical tools to be brought back to the local".

"The program aims to establish a unified base of knowledge and strengthen the whole IATSE. While Leadership Development is the primary focus of the course, all of the Four Pillars, including Communications, Activism, and Craft Skills and Safety Training, will be emphasized. Having local union leaders better prepared for their positions will reinforce the Four Pillars in the service of our core focus – always growing and strengthening the IATSE and its local unions for the benefit of our workers in the entertainment industry."

Local 490 is thrilled that we have progressed to this point of being able to send officers to the Training Institute. We are grateful to have officers that want to make this commitment and they are happy our membership is keen on sending them. 490 is growing in more ways than one and this is a concrete example of this.

Film Industry decorator, Sarah Jean, supports a film Incentive, do you?

It is important to create a personal message. Here are some things the MN Film & TV Board thinks are good content to include in your message,

"Your name and role in the industry, including a project you've worked on.

Thank you for including the Snowbate program in the current jobs bill at $500,000 annually, but in order to sustain a program that creates jobs and helps build a stable production industry, the investment needs to be much higher.

Without increased funding, we will lose Minnesota jobs and Minnesota stories to states that have the incentives to compete in this multi-billion dollar industry. "

Together, we can let our government know that our film industry is an important asset to our state and that to compete with other states in this trade, we need Government tax incentives for film in Minnesota to be successful.

Hundreds of crew socialized late into the evening to celebrate a year of work. It was said by someone at the event that the crowd consisted of, "the past, present and future crew of Minnesota". This was very true, as many old timers who are not as active on shoots mixed with film students and busy freelancers.

HBO & Local 490 wrap shooting on pilot.

On October 28th, 2016, HBO & Local 490 wrapped shooting on the pilot episode of "Mogadishu, MN". Local 490 wants to thank HBO for coming to MN and giving the state a shot at a series on the Somali community in MN. Local 490 was proud to have many of the key crew positions come from its ranks; Gaffer, Set Decorator, Propmaster, Lead Man, Locations and Wardrobe Supervisor were all local hires. Almost all of the crew beneath those keys were from 490. It is a testament of our union that HBO felt we had a strong enough roster to make that happen. Here are some shots of the cast & crew celebrating at the Corner Bar on South Washington.

Other Minnesota Film News:

The 2014 MN made film "Dear White People",  has been bought by Netflix to be made into a series. It is not known at this time where this will be shot. We hope the producer and director decide to come back to Minnesota. Sources say Netflix hope to premiere the series in 2017.

The Netflix 12 episode series, Lady Dynamite, premiered on Saturday May 20th. The union shoot had six days of MN scenes in 2015. These scenes figured prominently in the flashback "Duluth" parts of the episodes. The star of the series is Duluth native, Maria Bamford. The series is getting tons of critical praise. Many local 490 members worked on this excellent production.

Call the Capitol!

The Film Industry is once again under attack from the Republican caucus in the MN House. The MN Senate votes this Thursday! Please call your State senators and urge them to support Film & TV industry in MN!

Here is the upcoming Legislative schedule:

Last week the Republican controlled House voted on their Economic Development Bill that included $0 for Snowbate.

Thursday, April 28th the Senate will vote on their Economic Development Bill that includes $5.75 million for Snowbate.

When the two bills end up not matching they will go to a Conference Committee to make them match.

Please use the link below to find contact info for your MN Representative and MN Senator.  Contact them soon and tell them to fund the Snowbate Film Jobs Program.

490 Business Agent, Brian Simpson with Producer Erik Stolhanske testifying on the benefits of the Snowbate Jobs bill. (Photo from Twitter/ @jasonisaacson)

Even though Snowbate funding is part of an omnibus bill, it can still be changed on the Floor right before voting begins.  Last year there was a late attempt in the Senate to use Snowbate funds for broadband internet.  This year the $0 in the House is championed by Rep. Pat Garofalo from Farmington.  This plan is not supported by the House Democrats and it is not supported by all House Republicans.  If we make enough noise we may be able to influence a late change.

Keep in mind that if/when the Tax Committees meet this session, we will also be pursuing a 25% Tax Credit.  This credit would be separate from the Snowbate Cash Rebate.  A producer would pick which incentive is right for them.

For now, lets keep what we have in Snowbate.

The MN Senate will be voting on a bill this week to provide $5.75 million in additional funds for the Snowbate Jobs Program. This money would be added to the funds that are currently available.

Sen. Cohen has asked that we contact the Senators listed below to help pass this bill. Please tell them to support the Snowbate Film Jobs Program! Also, call your senators and house representatives, they need to hear from you! Minnesota Legislature - Geographic Information Services

The Fox Searchlight film "Wilson" starring Woody Harrelson and Laura Dern shot in Minnesota for six weeks and wrapped shooting on July 31st.

The film employed many local craftspeople, actors, teamsters and was shot under a Tier 2- IA contract. Local 490 was very proud of the many members hired off their roster.  490 President Mark Wojahn was Propmaster on the film was happy to see the Decorator Michelle Gilstead, Lead Man Rob Walstead, Key Grip Peter Clemence, Gaffer Tom Franchett, Charge Scenic Ben Bayne were all local Keys on the project.  Many other roles in Make up, Hair, Grip, Electric, Set dressing, Props all came from our roster. This film was a good example how a tier 2 film can be executed in Minnesota. The MN Film and TV board did an excellent job bringing "Wilson" to MN. 490 hopes to see other projects of this size use its membership to create their story.
